Film and theater reviews
Cate Marquis is a St. Louis-based film, theater and visual arts critic. She is Director and Co-Founder of the St. Louis Film Critics professional film critics association. A film historian whose focus is silent comedy, she writes film and theater reviews for various St. Louis publications, including the St. Louis Jewish Light, and gives presentations on early film history. As the daughter of noted St. Louis artist Paul Marquis, who was twice president of the St. Louis Artists Guild, she grew up in art galleries, theaters and movie houses. She appreciates a broad range of films and genres but especially enjoys international films, classic and silent films, and believes in promoting appreciation of really outstanding cinema.
Science writing
Why would a film critic write about science? Because she has a science degree and has worked as a lab researcher. Besides film and theater reviews,
Cate Marquis is also a science writer whose interests include biology,
medicine, general science and the environment. She has an advanced
degree in molecular biology and genetics, and has worked in cardiology
research and on the Human Genome Project. She writes opinion pieces on a
variety of science topics and on science news.
